Pilgrimage overview

October 17-28, 2024

Led by the Rev. Canon Dr. Kara Slade

Dear Friends,

Over the course of my life, I have been blessed by the time I’ve spent on pilgrimages in England, learning and worshiping in the cradle of our Anglican tradition. This time, I invite you to come with me – and with our Trinity Church family.

After flying from Newark to London, we’ll travel to Canterbury, where we will stay at the Canterbury Lodge within the Cathedral precincts. We will spend a day at Little Gidding, one of my favorite places in the world and the birthplace of post-Reformation Anglican monasticism. It’s also closely associated with the Oratory of the Good Shepherd, of which I’m a Priest Companion. We’ll then make the short trip to Cambridge, followed by a journey east to Norwich before heading north to Lincoln, York, and Durham.

Throughout the trip, we will spend time in prayer, observing the Daily Office and celebrating the Eucharist. I’ll guide the spiritual aspects of the pilgrimage, and at each stop we will have the help of local guides who know the history and architecture of each cathedral.

We have been planning this pilgrimage for a long time, and I hope that you’ll join me in what promises to be a wonderful, Christ-centered journey.

Yours faithfully in Christ,

Kara+

Day 1: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17

We meet in the afternoon at Newark Airport for our evening flight to London. Dinner will be served on board, and we hope to manage a few hours sleep before landing in London the next morning.

Day 2: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18

We land in the early morning at London’s Heathrow Airport. After clearing immigration and customs formalities, we will make the short drive to Windsor where we will have the chance to find breakfast before visiting Windsor Castle, one of the principal royal palaces of Britain. In the early afternoon we will drive to Canterbury aiming to arrive in time for those who wish to attend Choral Evensong. After the service we will have an opening dinner to mark the start of our pilgrimage.

Day 3: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19

Today will be devoted to exploring both the city of Canterbury and its cathedral. In the morning we will have a guided tour of the cathedral, and after breaking for lunch, there will be a walking tour of the city.

Day 4: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20

In the morning we will attend the main Cathedral Eucharist. In the afternoon we will drive to Tudeley, a tiny village in Kent, where every window in the church has been created by the famous artist Marc Chagall. We will say a simple Evening Prayer here, and learn the story of these unique windows before returning to Canterbury.

Day 5: MONDAY, OCTOBER 21

Leaving Canterbury after breakfast, we drive north, to visit Little Gidding, made famous by the poet T.S. Eliot. After a chance to worship in the small church and learn a little about this place, we will have the opportunity to have a simple lunch (not included in the pilgrimage price) before driving on to Cambridge, which will be our home for the next three nights.

Day 6: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 22

Today will be devoted to getting to know this world-famous university city. We will have a walking tour of the city in the morning, and in the afternoon spend some time visiting Corpus Christi College, and its Dean of Chapel.

Day 7: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23

Today we will head into East Anglia to visit the beautiful city of Norwich, sometime home of the famous mystic Mother Julian. We will have time to visit the majestic cathedral, as well as Julian’s cell, and time to explore this lovely medieval city.

Day 8: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24

Today we journey north, stopping in the majestic cathedral city of Lincoln, where we will visit the cathedral and have some free time to have lunch. Continuing north in the afternoon, we come to York, which will be our home for the final four nights of our pilgrimage.

Day 9: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25

Today we will explore the walled city of York, and its magnificent Minster with an expert local guide, who will help us discover the Roman, Viking and rich medieval history.

Day 10: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26

Our explorations of England’s northern region will see us visit Durham today, where a vast Norman cathedral, built as the shrine of St Cuthbert, dominates this university city. We will visit the cathedral, and have free time to enjoy its beautiful location on a remarkable peninsula. On our way back to York, we will visit one of the oldest churches in the country - a small Saxon church in the village of Escomb.

Day 11: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27

Our final day of pilgrimage will be spent in worshipping in York Minster in the morning, and having a free afternoon, with the opportunity to attend Choral Evensong for those who wish to do so. After Evensong we hope to have a ‘ghost tour’ of the city that will reveal some of its more macabre and bloody history by local resident ‘Mad Alice’. And for dinner we gather for a final group meal in a historic restaurant that forms part of the York Minster precinct, where we can celebrate all we have experienced of our journey together.

Day 12: MONDAY, OCTOBER 28

After an early breakfast our bus will take us to Newcastle Airport for a flight to London Heathrow, connecting on to our return flight to Newark, where we will land later this evening.
